Racial Discrimination
Racism has had a long history not only in India but around the world. The roots are quite strong that it is hard to abolish the practice of racism. Whether it was Dalit system or untouchability, it made a huge impact among the people of India at the time of pre-independence that its residue is still remained in the country.
Being racist towards someone is may be a source of fun and enjoyment to them but for the other party it makes a huge impact. It can affect them to that level that it may lead to depression, low self-esteem or pessimistic thinking. Racial boundaries can involve various factors such as physical appearance, language, national origin, religion culture. Various incidents of racism happen in our daily life but not all come in the light to get the attention of people. Talking about the issue, the one incident which actually took the attention of the world is the incident happened to George Floyd. The 'Black Lives Matter' protest gained the momentum not only in United States but the whole world. People across different countries came forward against the prevalence of racial discrimination worldwide. In India also, people show their support by taking it to social media like Twitter or Instagram. But the irony is there to notice that that people are posting the picture with #Blacklivesmatter, whereas the same type racial discrimination is rooted in the society which people never pay attention to.
In India, the obsession for "fair skin" is real. Several types of fairness creams are advertising claiming to give the "Fair" skin and people blindly buy those fairness creams just to look fairer . The "fair" skin tone mentioned in the matrimonial ads attracts most of the people. It is an irony that these practices are done in the society for several years which openly promoting racism but people put a blind eye on these issues considering it as a normal thing. Also, Ellen DeGeneres said that " Beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin. It's about knowing and accepting who you are". If you are confident in your own own skin and feel proud , nothing is more attractive and beautiful than this.
Not only this, but the incidences of racial discrimination also showed up at the time of pandemic. On March 2020, a man was arrested for spitting on a face of a Manipuri girl and calling her 'Corona'. But this is not the first time northeast people face racial discrimination. In India, people call them with different names using harsh words and somewhat alienate them by calling that they are not a part of India. This is where the main problem lies.
There are so many incidents of discrimination against people based on their color, race, culture has been seen. Racism does exist not only in India but around the world. And now it is high time that this problem should be addressed. These racial comments can make a negative impact in the lives of the people. The thing we can do is to speak up and stop promoting racial discrimination making it a better world for all the people to live in peace.
